Understanding the Working Principle of RCCB

Power in the form of electricity is common in the modern world, and it makes our daily tasks simpler. The varied appliances in your home and workplace have made life easier and more convenient. Almost everything we use in homes and offices uses electrical systems for convenience and productivity. But alongside enjoying these benefits, safety is equally important. Fixtures like the Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) are there to protect electric circuits.

RCCB is an electricity-sensing device that measures the amount of current flowing through a circuit at any given time. When it detects any residual current in the circuit or that the current flow has crossed a particular point, it automatically disconnects the circuit. Do you know that an unchecked power supply in a circuit can lead to electrocution and even fires? But RCCB assures complete safety. This is interesting and very important for you to learn. So, if you want to know how it works, this article is for you. Here, we give you a detailed insight into the working principle of RCCB.

The Key Components of RCCB

Before exploring the detailed workings of an RCCB, let’s first examine its key components:

Phase Wire

This is the live wire, also known as hot wire. It is responsible for sending electricity from the main power supply to the circuit.

Breaker Contacts

These are the points that determine if the current can flow through the RCCB and the circuit. In a normal circuit, they are closed. However, they open when there is an issue with the current flow.

Neutral Wire

This wire is responsible for sending back the current to the power source.

Test Button

This allows the user to test if the RCCB is working properly. When you push the button, it cuts off the power supply in the breaker.

Current Limiting Resistor

When you press the test button, the current flows directly from the neutral wire to the phase wire. In order to ensure the circuit is working properly, the current limiting resistor ensures that the current flow is not too high.

Sensing Coil

This is wrapped around the RCCB’s core. It determines whether the phase and neutral wire are in balance or not.

Core

Made from ferrous material, it forms an opposing magnetic field as current flows through the phase and neutral wire. In some cases, the core has a plastic coating that ensures insulation and protection.

Relay

When the sensing coil detects an imbalance between the phase and neutral wire, this opens the breaker contact, stopping the current flow.

Working Principle Behind RCCB

According to Kirchhoff’s Law, in an electric circuit, the sum of the incoming current in a circuit should be equal to the sum of the outgoing current. Thus, in an ideal electric circuit, the current flowing through the live wire should be the same as the current flowing through the neutral wire. RCCB works on this principle. When it detects any discrepancy in this balance, it immediately takes action and trips the circuit.

How Does the RCCB Work?

Now that you know the working principle of RCCB, let us understand how it works:

  • Normal Working

Under normal circumstances, the current flowing through the live wire is equal to the current returning in the neutral wire. This means that there is no residual current in the circuit.

  • Leakage Detection

The RCCB constantly senses the balance in the current flow. If insulation fails or a person accidentally touches a live wire, the balance is disrupted. The RCCB immediately picks this up.

  • Magnetic Field Generation

The imbalance in the current flow creates a residual magnetic field in the core of the RCCB.

  • Triggering the Relay

The generation of the magnetic flux activates the relay mechanism. This immediately trips the RCCB, disconnecting the power supply.

  • Circuit Isolation

By disconnecting the faulty circuit, the RCCB prevents electric shocks and also reduces the chance of an electric fire.

FAQs

How to check if RCCB is working?

In order to check if the RCCB is working, press down on the test button. It will immediately flip down and cut off the power supply. However, if it does not flip down, it is faulty. Immediately call an expert to get it repaired or changed.

Can RCCB work without earthing?

Absolutely! An RCCB can work without earthing, though this is not recommended. The main purpose of an RCCB is to detect an imbalance of current flow in an electric circuit and cut off the power supply. This will work without earthing, too. However, earthing adds more safety.

Can RCCB be repaired?

Generally, RCCB is not designed to repair and should be replaced if it malfunctions. If your RCCB is tripping frequently, shows mechanical failures, or has ageing components, you must replace it.
